Chapter 2: Terminology

Semi-Automatic Pistols

Semi-automatic pistols have several other unique parts. The frame is basically the lower half of the gun, containing the trigger assembly and magazine well. The slide attaches to the top of the frame and holds the barrel and the extractor. The slide stop is a simple bar that locks the slide back in the open position. The manual safety/decocking lever provides a means to block the hammer from falling or striking the firing pin. In some weapons, it also provides a safe means for dropping the hammer without firing. Note that revolvers, as a rule, have no manual safety.

The magazine is the oblong metal box that holds the ammunition. It holds them in a single vertical stack (single-stack) or in a double staggered stack (double-stack). The follower presses upwards under spring pressure on the cartridges in the magazine. They are prevented from flying out by the lips of the magazine. When held in place like this, the only way the cartridges can be removed from the magazine is to push the top one forwards until it comes out from under the lips. The follower then springs it upards and out of the magazine. The magazine release disengages the magazine and allows it to drop free of the frame. The extractor is a small hooked rod that catches on the lip of the rimless cartridge and pulls it free of the breech. The ejector is usally a simple piece of metal attatched to the frame that the head of the case hits as it is pulled back by the extractor. The force of the slide pulling the case backwards against the ejector cause the case to be flipped from the ejection port and out of the gun. The rest of the parts have the same functions as their counterparts on the revolver.
