Chapter 3: Selecting a Firearm

Manufacturer

Once you've shot the different calibers and found one you like, your next choice is manufacturer. There's a bewildering array of handguns out there, and it may take a while before you find one you like. The bottom line should be: Do I like shooting this gun? It should fit comfortably in your hands, be easy to grip, and you should feel comfortable shooting it. Avoid the temptation to buy a gun with lots of fancy gadgets... compensators, hair triggers, and the like. A good carry gun should be simple; too much complexity and it's reliability diminishes. Highly tuned "race guns" are extremely accurate and cycle fast; but they require inordinate amounts of care and servicing and are best left for competition shooters. Your gun should be accurate, of course; but carry guns these days are very accurate "out of the box". Some accessories that will enhance its performance and serviceability will be discussed in later chapters.

You don't need all the fancy bells and whistles on a self-defense gun - and are probably better off without them.

Another, often overlooked, consideration is the name of the gun. With today's litigous society being what it is, carrying a gun called a "King Cobra" or a "Devastator" could reflect negatively on the witness stand. Lawyers will undoubtedly seize on this as a sign of your aggressive desire to shoot the first person who looked at you the wrong way. Gun manufacturers are, thankfully, taking this to heart and naming their weapons innocuously.
